This series brings to you the most thought-provoking excerpts from my chat sessions with visionary personalities, as recorded for the Slingshot Living radio show. The conversations reveal valuable wisdom, playful anecdotes and useful advice on how to continuously overstep perceived boundaries for success in your business and your personal life.
This segment features an excerpt from my inspirational chat with Chris Guillebeau, writer, traveler and fighter of the status quo.
Gabor: If I ask you about the word infatuation, what are you infatuated with and who do you like to infatuate with your example and your writing?
Chris: I love the word [infatuation]. I have it circled here in my notebook… I guess my target market so to speak is people who want to change the world. People who are interested in unconventional, remarkable living. So I deliberately keep it broad. It’s a psychographic, it’s not a demographic. What I’ve learned along the way is if you want to infatuate people you have to give them a reason to care first of all and then you have to give them a mission, a challenge. I’m really interested in helping people push boundaries. Not in telling people what to think or what to do, but helping them to figure out themselves and figure what they want to do and figure out what their obstacles are. So I like to give people a mission and give them a challenge and make sure they know they aren’t alone. That’s another thing that’s really important. If you’re thinking about this kind of creative process often if you’re working a traditional job or if you’re in a small town or if your family doesn’t understand it can be very motivating and empowering to realize that there are a lot of people doing this [challenging conventional wisdom]—those people listening to your show, familiar with my work or maybe someone else’s work, and so I think providing the stories and the examples of people who are doing this in their own way can be very affirming—especially if you can provide them from different perspectives… It’s a powerful thing.
